Winter Home Maintenance Guide - Coventry Homes Edmonton

Winter Home Maintenance Guide

When the temperature drops, we really begin to appreciate our warm and cozy homes. The best way to give our homes some TLC is through a little bit of preventative maintenance.

To help guide us with some professional advice, we chatted with the experts from our Warranty team for winter-approved home care tips that will keep things running as efficiently and effectively as possible.

Keep Humidity Under Control

One of the biggest things to pay attention to during these chilly days is the humidity in your home. Our warranty team suggests humidity levels be around 25%-30% during the winter months (using a Hygrometer is a great way to monitor these levels). Keep fog and frost from building up on your windows by following these easy and important steps:

  •          Don’t close or cover any heat vents near your windows.
  •          Keep the base of your blinds raised approximately six inches off the windowsill to help with airflow.
  •          Clean or replace your range hood filter once a month.
  •          Replace your humidifier filter.
  •          Ensure bathroom fans are turned on for a minimum of one hour after a bath or shower

Ensure Your Furnace System Is Running Smoothly

The best way to keep your furnace working at an optimal level is to change the filter every six months, have it serviced annually, and have the heat ducts cleaned every 2-3 years. Doing so will ensure fine dust doesn’t collect on air duct surfaces, vents, coils, and motors. You’ll be keeping your furnace in tip-top shape, and your home’s air quality free from dust and allergens.

Test Your Sump Pump

Taking the time to test your sump pump can save you from dealing with the misfortune of a flooded basement.  Your sump pump should be tested in the spring, summer, and fall, during heavy rain, as well as prior to going on a vacation. Your sump pump has a big job – it’s responsible for removing underground water and pumping it back up and away from your home. So, before the snow begins to melt, make sure you give your home’s sump pump a test!

Check Batteries In Smoke And Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Checking your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors is something every homeowner should do monthly. This is especially important during the winter months, because our windows are closed and we’re using our fireplaces more often. Tip: Set a monthly reminder in your calendar or phone to keep you on track with this important task.
