With February coming to an end, the countdown to spring is officially on! What better way to celebrate warmer weather coming our way than to spruce up your home with some of 2018’s hottest interior design trends?
We chatted with one of our amazing in-house designers, McKenzie Campbell, and got the inside scoop on which elements the design team is loving this year – and a few they have already incorporated into our newest Coventry showhomes!
Mid-Century Modern
Showcasing clean lines and simplicity, Mid-Century Modern interior themes are certainly making a mark this year. From simple furniture to modern décor items, this style is minimal and emphasizes getting rid of the excess. Tip: Using a dramatic colour within a space that has been styled using this approach will help add some visual interest – just avoid mixing more than one vibrant colour to keep the space looking modern.
Geometric Patterns
Playing off the popularity of the Mid-Century Modern interior style, geometric patterns are having their moment. Although it’s definitely not a new trend, expect to see more geometric patterns with a bold presence. From exciting colours to dramatic patterns, this eye-catching trend will inject some personality into a simple or quiet space. We really love this design trend on cement tiles – check it out in our Newcastle showhome’s kitchen backsplash!
Gold and Black Hardware
We saw plenty of transitional and vintage charm in home design over the years, and we’ll continue seeing it throughout 2018. The popularity of gold and black hardware is one of the many ways we’re seeing homeowners incorporate the theme into their homes. With classic styles and modern finishes (think: matte black), this finishing touch is a great way to boost the character within your home.
Natural Elements
The desire to add natural elements within a home is trend that comes from escapism and the need to connect more with nature. We live in a hectic world, so there’s massive appeal to include natural design and décor within our living spaces. For 2018 the natural edit includes tropical and botanical prints used for statement wallpaper and upholstery. The use of natural materials, like wood and marble are trends still going strong from last year. We’re also seeing wide plank flooring in laminate as a modern twist on traditional hardwood floors. This flooring option offers the beloved distressed natural look, but with an updated wide size – 6 inches compared to the typical 3-4 inches offered with hardwood.
Statement Light Fixtures
Say goodbye to generic lighting and simple pendants! 2018 is the year where vintage and industrial lighting makes a statement. Finishes in brass and copper are especially hot this year, and patterns that are unexpected and a step away from the ordinary are taking centre stage.
