Oh, the weather outside is frightful – but the holiday season shouldn’t be!
The best way to get yourself ready for the hustle and bustle of December is to do a little bit of early prep. Follow our tips and we promise your holidays will be jollier than ever!
Declutter
Give yourself a day in the next two weeks to declutter some of the high traffic areas of your home. Clear all your countertops, take all your recyclables to the depot, and shred all of your mail that has been piling up. Open up your closets and donate anything that’s been sitting unworn for longer than you can remember (trust us, you’re not going to wear it ‘one day’). Don’t forget about your jacket closets – these spaces tend to be forgotten and end up overflowing during the holidays when guests visit! Freshen up your entertaining spaces with a good cleaning and put away anything that’s been lingering from previous seasons…yep, we’re talking about the fall/Halloween décor that’s still hanging around.
Prep Your Supplies For The Season
Getting together with friends and family is what makes this festive season so special. If you’re expecting to play host, now’s a great time to pull out all your entertaining supplies. Having your tablecloths, dinnerware, and serving platters ready and in an easily accessible space (not the top shelf of the closet) will make your life a little less stressful. Expecting a lot of wrapping in your future? Make a note to pick up wrapping paper, tape, ribbons, gift bags + tissue paper, and cards. Put them all in a container that you can easily grab when you need to wrap a gift and go!
Test & Organize Holiday Decor
The first of December is usually the green light for holiday décor to go up. Now is the time to pull out your decorations from storage to see if everything is in good condition – check your Christmas tree, make sure your indoor and outdoor lights are working, and create a list of anything that you need to replace or you want to add to your home’s festive look.
Stock The Kitchen
Holidays = food, and we all know that last minute entertaining always seems to creep up on us this time of the year. Turn any unexpected visit into a festive affair with a stocked kitchen that will have you winning the holidays. Have a homemade baked favourite you’re known for? Make a few extra next time you’re in the kitchen. You can pop them in the freezer for a hassle-free treat – we’re talking banana bread, cookies, muffins, brownies…you get the idea. Add a holiday section to your next grocery list and include items like crackers, snack mix, and drink mix for your pantry. Your fridge and freezer can be lifesavers, so include some refrigerated crescent rolls (the uses are endless) and ready-to-bake mini appetizers. Tip: If baking isn’t really your thing, grab some cookie dough – you’ll thank us when your home feels warm and smells delicious.
