Tips for a Last-Minute Summer Staycation

Tips for a Last-Minute Summer Staycation

With less than a month of summer break remaining, there’s no better time to play tourist in Edmonton than now!

Whether you’ve already had the chance to indulge in a holiday get-away, or if you feel like the summer season is passing you by, here are a few fun staycation ideas that are easy to incorporate into those last few weeks of August. No need to pack a suitcase or bring your passport – our city is full of fantastic places and activities to enjoy!

Art Gallery of Alberta

Head downtown for an inspiring visit to the gorgeous Art Gallery of Alberta. Tour the exhibits on your own or check out there events calendar to see what interactive drop-in programs you can catch – like Tours for Tots, which is geared towards children aged 3-5. Enjoy some tasty dishes at Zinc or some light bites at Terrace Café, and don’t forget to visit their gift shop before you leave!

West Edmonton Mall World Water Park

Wish you had made it to the beach this summer? Soothe your beach blues by lounging by the wave pool at the World Water Park in West Edmonton Mall! A tropical climate awaits you, along with over 21 heart-pumping waterslides and fun-for-all play features. You’re sure to work up an appetite after a day here, so dry off and walk over to BRBN St. (also within WEM) or a fantastic selection of restaurants that will satisfy you hunger.

Fort Edmonton Park

Take a trip back in time and explore one of Canada’s largest living history museums! Spend the day strolling through Fort Edmonton Park where you’ll learn about Edmonton’s history during the fur trading era, the settlement era, the

Municipal era, and the metropolitan era – complete with costumed interpreters leading the way! Take a ride on the Railway Caboose and Streetcar, or have your little ones try a wagon or pony ride. End your day in historic style with dinner in the park at Johnson’s Cafe in the Hotel Selkirk.

Muttart Conservatory

Take a day to treat your eyes (and your nose!) to the beauty that lies within the Muttart Conservatory! Within these iconic glass pyramids you’ll find one of Canada’s largest botanical collections – three biomes feature year-round displays and a fourth pyramid showcases creative feature displays that are changing throughout the year. Tip: Make your way over to Culina Café, (found within the Conservatory) at the start of your day for a delicious lunch or brunch.

Old Strathcona

One of the most vibrant neighbourhoods in our city makes for the perfect place to take a day-trip! Choose a Saturday this month to visit the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market where you’ll have the chance to wander through over 130 vendors showcasing locally grown produce, specialty foods, hand-made goods, décor and so much more! After, make your way over to Whyte Avenue where you can shop, eat, or even catch a movie at the beautiful Princess Theatre! Learn more about all there is to do here.
